Sweet and Spicy Air Fryer Salmon - Recipe Diaries (1)

I've been making a lot of Asian recipes for dinner lately since they don't have dairy in it. A couple of nights ago, I made Honey Coconut Cashew Chicken and that was delicious. My brother actually made this salmon recipe the last time I was over at his place and everyone loved it. It's a recipe that comes from Gina's recipe book over at her website Skinny Taste. He served it with this Thia Quinoa Salad. Very healthy and delicious.

What Ingredients do I need?

  • Fresh Salmon - Can be cooked either in the air fryer or the oven. I prefer my air fryer because it takes about 12 minutes. Sometimes I’ll get bags of frozen salmon at either Costco or Sams and just let it defrost for a couple of hours before cooking it.
  • Soy Sauce - Use a Low Sodium or if you don’t have that on hand go for Tamari or Coconut Amino Acids
  • Honey - Always go for a raw honey and one that is unfiltered. Preferably locally sourced.
  • Rice Vinegar - some good substitutes for this type of vinegar is White Wine, Apple Cider, or Sherry Vinegar
  • Sriracha Sauce - for some heat
  • Grated Fresh Ginger - I like to use the stuff that comes in the tube cause all you have to do is squeeze it.
  • Minced Garlic - Chopped fresh garlic can take some time to chop so I often always use the freshly minced garlic that comes already made in a jar.
  • Sesame Oil- is a delicious and versatile ingredient that is commonly used in Asian cuisine. It is made from toasted or raw sesame seeds and has a rich, nutty flavor that can add depth to many dishes.
  • Freshly Chopped Scallions or Sesame Seeds for Garnish
  • See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

What to serve with Sweet and Spicy Glazed Salmon?

Cook up some basmati rice on the stove or in a rice cooker. Then serve it with some fresh edamame or avocado.

How to Make Sweet and Spicy Salmon

In a 1-gallon zip-top plastic bag, combine the soy sauce, honey, vinegar, Sriracha, ginger, and garlic. Add the salmon, toss to coat evenly, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 8 hours, turning the fish once.

Remove the salmon from the bag, reserving the marinade. Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat and add the sesame oil. Rotate the pan to coat the bottom evenly and add the salmon. Cook until one side of the fish is browned, about 2 minutes. Flip the salmon and cook until the other side browns, 2 more minutes. Reduce the heat to low and pour in the reserved marinade. Cover and cook until the fish is cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes.

Place a piece of salmon on each of 4 serving plates and sprinkle with the scallions.

Air Fryer: Set the temperature to 350 degrees and the timer to 12 minutes. Take the fresh salmon out of the zip lock bag and place it down in the air fryer basket. Use any leftover marinade on top of the fish after cooking.

  1. Poppy Steinbrecher says

Gina, I’m making up some freezer meals for my grandson who is away at college and am wondering if I could put the salmon and marinade in individual freezer bags and freeze them for him. Hopefully all he’d need to do is defrost and air fry when he’s hungry for salmon. Have you ever tried it, or do you think it will work? I don’t want the fish to get gummy from the vinegar.

How do you cook salmon in an air fryer without it sticking? ›

Brush with Oil

Salmon is a fatty fish (remember, those fats are good-for-you-fats!) and therefore doesn't need a lot of oil, but I do brush the salmon fillets lightly, and mostly on the skin side so that it doesn't stick to the surface of the air fryer basket.

Does cooking salmon in the air fryer make your house smell? ›

Good question! While I love making salmon in the oven or on the stovetop, the air fryer is hands down my new go-to method because it's essentially mess-free. No oil splattering, no house smelling like salmon for hours… it's truly a breeze in under 10 minutes and cooks perfectly every time!

Can you put aluminum foil in air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Can you use parchment paper in an air fryer? ›

Yes, and here's what you need to know. Parchment paper is a safe and effective liner to use in the air fryer. To avoid safety hazards, weigh down the paper with food and keep away from the heating element. Parchment paper can be heated up to roughly 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Which side of the salmon should I cook first? ›

Salmon fillets are best cooked starting with the skin-side down. This prevents over-browning the meat, which can make it dry and pretty unappealing to look at on the plate. "When pan-frying or grilling, cook salmon fillets skin-side down for 5-7 minutes, flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes," says Norton.

What is the white stuff on air fry salmon? ›

Albumin is a liquid protein that solidifies when the fish is cooked, seeping out as the muscle fibers contract under heat, becoming thick and a bright white. Think of your salmon as a wet towel being rung out. The wringing is the heat and the water being pushed out is that white stuff you're seeing.

Why does my salmon turn white in air fryer? ›

The white stuff on salmon is called albumin.

As the meat cooks, the coagulated albumin gets squeezed out and appears in the form of the weird, slimy, white substance that you are probably familiar with (and weirded out by).

How do you clean an air fryer after cooking salmon? ›

To clean the inside of an air fryer, start by knocking any crumbs out and wiping up any visible oil. Then, gently wipe out the interior, including the coil, using a towel and warm water. Depending on the soil level, repeat this step with warm soapy water to dissolve any cooked-on grease.

Can you overcook fish in an air fryer? ›

Flip it Halfway Through

You should always flip seafood once when it is halfway done. Flipping it at the halfway point is the best way to prevent it from burning or overcooking.

Why does my air fryer stink up the house? ›

The housing and inner drawer of the airfryer are made of plastic, the pan and basket are PTFE coated. These parts might release some smell during the first uses of the appliance, as the airfryer reaches very high temperatures (up to 200°C).

Why does my cooked fish smell like ammonia? ›

Rather, an aged fillet will be “fishy” and have an ammonia-like odor, which is a byproduct of the deterioration and decomposition process. Even after a fillet is cooked—such as in a restaurant—old fish, although not harmful to eat, will have a slight ammonia taste and smell, which is typical of aged cod.

Does food need to be flipped in an air fryer? ›

6. SHAKE OR FLIP FOOD. Most air fryers require you to shake the basket at least once during the air fry process to ensure every bit is crisped and browned to perfection. Some recipes call for flipping or shaking every 5 minutes, so don't stray too far from your air fryer while cooking.

Do you flip salmon halfway through? ›

Add salmon skin-side down and let cook 6 to 8 minutes, or until the bottom half of the fish looks opaque and the skin easily releases from the grill. Flip and cook 4 to 6 minutes longer, or until the entirety of the fish is cooked through.

How long before you flip salmon? ›

Let the salmon cook on the first side completely undisturbed until the flesh appears cooked about 3/4 of the way up the fillet, about 5 to 6 minutes. With a fish spatula or similar long, wide, flexible spatula, carefully flip the fillets.

Do you flip salmon halfway? ›

Place the fillets skin-side down and sear for about 6-8 minutes, depending on how thick the piece of fish is. Flip once you see that the flesh has lightened about 3/4 of the way up the fish. Sear for another 1-2 minutes.
