Home Office, Study & Library Furniture

One effect of the pandemic has been the increase in the number of people working from home. If you find yourself working from home more, you’ll want a nice home office to work in. We’ve seen a sharp rise in the number of home offices we’ve been asked to design and build. Here are some of our most recent projects.

Kent Home Office

We made this beautiful home office furniture for a city worker in Woodchurch, Kent, in 2021. The room had a lovely view out over the garden and, with the design, we brought a sense of the natural world inside by using locally sourced English rustic oak for the desktops. We selected whole oak slabs from which to build the tops. The timber has great character and we emphasised this by including naturally occurring imperfections like knot holes and voids. But to make the desktops practical to use, we filled them with a clear tinted resin, then buffed and polished the tops until they shone. We also added shelves for storage above the desk areas, supported using custom-made, steel frames. To offset the rustic tops, the under-top cabinetry was clean and minimal with an off-white custom coloured spray finish to match the room decoration.

“Milkwood did an excellent job with designing, manufacturing and fitting the desk and shelves for our home office. They were thoughtful, consultative and insightful. The quality of the materials used is outstanding and the home office looks fantastic. And I am particularly pleased that as part of the project, Milkwood Furniture has now planted 31 trees in a reforestation project through Mossy Earth.”

Appledore Home Office

For this home office overlooking an orchard garden in Appledore, Kent, we specially laminated the desktops using thick, rustic oak veneers to match the floorboards. Shaker styled doors were spray finished in a custom colour to match the room decoration and finished off with some beautiful graphite ring finger pulls. We incorporated dimmable LED lighting into the furniture and the cabinetry also included a bank of our custom filing cabinets.

“The office is both beautiful and functional; and a great space to work in. It was a pleasure to work with you at the design stage and then watch as you assembled and crafted the pieces together. The tree planting scheme sounds fantastic. Such a good idea.”

Rye Study

A traditionally crafted study in oak, completed in 2021 for a new arrival to Rye, from London. The open shelving is supported on height-adjustable antique brass loops with metal ferrules added to provide longevity to the cabinetry. Shaker style doors are fitted with an unusual triangular finger pull in black, picked out by the client. The cabinetry included our custom filing cabinets, a slide-out printer tray hidden behind one of the doors and an underslung drawer below the desk for stationary. We also set an antique finish brass radiator grill into the desktop. A glazed display cabinet at one end is internally lit by dimmable LED units and the lighting is extended also to the pelmet. A traditional solid oak cornice above finishes the furniture off well.

“I commissioned Milkwood to build me a home office. We decided on oak for the desk, bookcase and display cabinet. Despite the problems of Covid every detail was discussed and checked by email. The result is fantastic, the workmanship excellent. I would highly recommend Milkwood.”

Bow Home Office

We designed and built this home office for a home worker in Bow, East London in 2020. The desktops were constructed from reclaimed Iroko and Teak woods, formally science laboratory tops salvaged from a Kent school. We designed and built a modular system to house files, computer and printer within a mix of open boxes and doored cabinets, spay finished in a lively, colourful palette chosen by the client and arranged asymmetrically across two walls. The result is unlike any other home office we’ve done – a truly unique creation that we’re proud of.

Kent Study

We made a cosy study for an active retiree, within a period home in the Kent village of Woodchurch, in 2018. Our brief was to design and build new furniture to harmonise with our client’s existing furniture and to provide a practical and comfortable study to work in.

Walnut tops were stained to match an existing antique desk. For the Shaker style cabinet doors, we stained the knobs too, adding further design interest. The shelves are again supported on height-adjustable antique brass pins with metal ferrules added to provide longevity to the cabinetry. Cable paraphernalia was neatly hidden from view – and dust – with a pair of detachable panels fitted underneath the desk.
